Writing is a good way to stimulate learning and critical thinking. There are numerous forms of writing that students face everyday. Students often feel more comfortable writing about non-fiction topics or strictly creative writing, than writing content of an autobiographical nature. College essay writing is completely autobiographical and asks you to get in touch with your values, beliefs, childhood memories, and what you want to achieve when you "grow up."

Lauren Kahn M.A., CEO of Lone Star Ed Consulting, will lead this engaging workshop and help simplify and demystify the college essay. She has helped edit hundreds of essays for students over her past five years in education as an educational consultant and academic tutor.  To learn more about Lauren's professional background, please click here.

This workshop is targeted for rising high school juniors and seniors. There will be a staff-to-student ratio of no more than 1:5. Some highlights of the workshop will include:
  • Essay brainstorming
  • How to write about yourself without being a bragger or boring
  • How to avoid the pitfalls of the admissions essay and excite the reader
  • How to make each word hold meaning.
  • General resume creation (It is not always what you have accomplished, but how you present your achievements)
Students in the course will need to provide their own computer laptop, USB drive, and a notebook to write outlines. Lone Star Ed Consulting will recommend books to buy to supplement the essay brainstorming process, but they are optional. We will provide copies of essays to analyze. The workshop will be fun, informative, and productive.
